When Will Labor Start? Signs to Watch For

As your due date gets closer, you might find yourself wondering “Is this it?” with every cramp or twinge. The final weeks of pregnancy are filled with anticipation, excitement, and yes—lots of questions. One of the biggest ones? When will labor actually start?

While every body and every baby is different, there are a few signs that labor may be on the horizon. Let’s break them down so you know what to look for—and what’s totally normal as your body preps for the big day.

🔄 1. Your Baby “Drops” (Lightening)

One of the earliest signs labor might be approaching is when your baby moves lower into your pelvis. This is often called “lightening” and it can happen a few weeks before labor begins—especially if this is your first baby. You might notice:

  • Less pressure on your lungs (finally, you can breathe!)
  • More pressure on your bladder (hello, frequent bathroom trips)
  • A visible lower bump position

💩 2. More Frequent Bathroom Visits

And not just for peeing. Some women experience looser stools or even mild diarrhea in the days or hours leading up to labor. It’s your body’s natural way of clearing things out and making space.

💥 3. Increased Braxton Hicks Contractions

Braxton Hicks are the “practice” contractions your uterus has throughout pregnancy. But as labor nears, these tightenings may:

  • Feel more intense
  • Happen more often
  • Be more uncomfortable

The key difference? True labor contractions become regular and increase in intensity, while Braxton Hicks usually fade with rest, hydration, or a change in position.

🌊 4. Your Water Might Break

This doesn’t always happen like it does in the movies (with a dramatic gush in the middle of a grocery store). In real life:

  • It might be a slow trickle or a noticeable gush
  • It could happen before or after contractions begin
  • If it does happen, call your provider—even if you’re not having contractions yet

🩸 5. You See the “Bloody Show”

This charmingly-named event is a small amount of mucus mixed with blood that you might notice after going to the bathroom. It’s a sign that your cervix is beginning to dilate and efface—which means labor could be starting soon!

🕐 6. Regular, Strong Contractions

This is the most obvious (and important!) sign labor has begun. Unlike the Braxton Hicks contractions from earlier on, these:

  • Come at regular intervals
  • Get closer together
  • Get stronger over time
  • Don’t go away with movement or hydration

Tip: Use the 5-1-1 rule: If contractions are 5 minutes apart, last for 1 minute each, and have been going on for at least 1 hour, it may be time to head to the hospital or call your midwife!

🌟 Final Thoughts

Every woman’s body has its own timing and rhythm, and while these signs are helpful to know, remember: Labor doesn’t follow a script. It’s totally normal to feel unsure, even when it’s the real deal. Trust your instincts, stay in touch with your care provider, and know that you’ve got this.

Whether you’re days or weeks away, you’re getting closer to meeting your baby—and that’s something worth celebrating. 💕
